Do you want your book published or do you want to sell your original artwork ? Self-publishing, online galleries and Webcasting for musicians and bands, are just a few of the options open to today's creative people.
So you’ve written the next best seller. How do you get the world to know about it. The traditional methods are starting to be overturned in a big way by the very thing that you are using to view these words… the internet.
If you are a creative person it can be intensely frustrating and demoralising to have to hawke your talents around agencies and publishers, only to be rejected because your vision doesn't fit into their predicted trends. Time and time again we hear the phrase "it's not what you know, it's who you know" and that's just the problem, traditionally, a handful of people dictate the quality and style of content that is available to us. Their choices a informed by the need to make a profit and sustain their careers so they tend to stick to fairly safe territory.
Well, the old order is rapidly changing and the media giants of old are finally having to battle for their positions. Artists, musicians and authors are slowly starting to turn the table and the old guard is starting to sit up and take notice. Acts like the Arctic Monkeys and Gnarls Barclay have been catapulted to the top of the music charts heavily assisted by cultivating a huge internet following.
Scottish singer, Sandi Thom , is a classic example of the industry being forced to sit up and take note of the sheer weight of internet buzz. Tired of tramping around the country from gig to gig in a worn out old car, she decided enough was enough . She bought a £60 web cam and and started to make web cast concerts around the world from her basement flat. From average audiences of 2-300 in her gigging days, she was suddenly playing to tens of thousands of people who were logging on each night to see her show. Eventually the industry had to sit up and take note and she and her band were signed up by music giants RCA Sony BMG.
The moral of all this is, if you have something that you feel is unique, by all means try the traditional methods of getting exposure for your work, but start to think outside the box too. Use the internet to set your own agenda and get your work out there. If you're an Artist there are loads of "E-Galleries" out there that offer free exhibition space and the chance to sell prints of your works. For authors, create e-books or self publish. There are companies out there that specilise in short runs and the others that promote original publications. Google even has it's own free book promotion site called Google Book Search. A whole new industry is being built around e-books with most major titles being made available. For musicians, the options are endless with a world craving new music for their Ipods and mp3 players. New software is available to produce music that would have cost thousands to record and produce just a few short years ago. You as the artists hold the reigns and have the ultimate creative say
